Digital media to see speediest growth for ad investment: report

Advertising spending in Canada is expected to jump at a compound annual growth rate of 5.3 per cent over the next four years, according to new data from the Canadian Marketing Association.

The report said that advertising investment will rise to more than $23.3 billion in 2011, from $19 billion this year, with every dollar spent on advertising expected to directly result in nearly $9 of economic activity in the country.

Overall direct sales from advertising campaigns are forecasted to increase from this year's levels by roughly 33 per cent, to $203 billion by 2011, the report added.

"Digital media is expected to lead all other marketing channels in 2011 in terms of direct sales, with purchases resulting from marketing offers received over the Internet and through commercial e-mail forecast to top $46.6 billion by 2011," the report read.

Chalk One Up For The Armchair Economists

In this case, we need to chalk one up for the "armchair economists." The analyst, David Card of Jupiter Research (the same analyst who incorrectly said that Radiohead's new offering would only work because the band was well known), dismisses Arrington's economics as "oversimplified analysis," but doesn't explain why it's actually wrong -- and that's because it's not. Card goes on to say that based on Arrington's analysis "software, filmed entertainment, soda at McDonalds, and the classic example, high-end perfume, should all be free," using that statement as a reason to dismiss the economics. But it's actually Card who's way off on the economics here. Like many of the folks who respond emotionally, Card seems to be confusing what he thinks Arrington is saying with what Arrington is actually saying.

Tenneco Reports Improved Year-Over-Year Third Quarter Results on ...

SGA&E in the quarter includes increased investments in engineering for technology development and future platform launches as well as an expense of $5 million for aftermarket customer changeover costs. Excluding third quarter 2007 changeover costs and restructuring costs in the prior year, SGA&E is 8.1% versus 9.3% the prior year.

EBIT as a percent of revenue was 3.7% versus 3.9% a year ago. Higher substrate sales more than accounted for the decrease. The company continues to see margin benefits from advanced technology content on new large-volume OE emission control platforms, which helps counter higher substrate sales and a shift to a higher percentage of OE revenue.

Cash used by operating activities was $9 million versus $5 million generated by operating activities a year ago, driven by a greater use of working capital to support revenue growth, partially offset by higher earnings.

How American theatre lost it

I tend to write about small groups of men and women (friends, lovers, co-workers, family), locked in some kind of gender struggle. These are the politics that interest me, and I scour over them like Herman Melville's Bartleby sitting at his little wooden desk. In the course of a decade of writing, however, I have also tried to look at religion, race, art, national tragedy and a host of other social ills. Am I a naturally political writer? Not at all. A writer like Tony Kushner strikes me as someone far more naturally gifted at bringing the private and public worlds of his characters to life: he may be the most obvious link between the British writers I've long admired and contemporary America. But I have a capricious streak in me that likes writing about the unexpected, messing about with what my audience might want to see or hear or experience - and I think of these as positive qualities.
